This is a blog designed to raise awareness about the pressing issue of resistant bacteria. I will post Today's Change (a suggestion of changes you can make to help) Article of the Day (an article about this topic) Tomorrow's Plan (plans to help raise awareness). Every two weeks I will have Tell a Friend Friday (on this day I suggest you tell a certain amount of friends about this issue/ introduce them to this blog. It is a reminder to spread the word.)

I hope you decide to participate in my polls and events, and read my articles. Every person who reads this brings us 1/7 billionth closer to a solution. On our own, we are insignificant. But together we can change the world.

Today's Change: Wash Your Hands

I know this sounds redundant and tired, but it is important to wash your hands. Soap kills off bacteria without creating a resistance. This also prevents the spread of infection, which will cut down on the usage of antibiotics. You should wash your hands before meals, after riding on the subway, when you get home, etc. Although it sounds small it could potentially make a huge difference.

Tomorrow's Plan: Warning Signs

Ok. Here is my plan to raise awareness. Tomorrow in school I am going to make some small squares of paper. These squares are going to say 'STOP DONT USE THIS HAND SANITIZER'. Below that i will have a brief description of why Hand Sanitizer should not be used. This will allow them to learn about this issue, and hopefully it will also stop them from using the hand sanitizer. I am considering putting my URL on the note, so that they can have a chance to learn more. I will tape them to the bottles of Hand Sanitizer.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone out there does the same!

Today's Change: Hand Sanitizer

Instead of using Hand Sanitizer, wash your hands with soap. It has the same effect as hand sanitizer, but without the antibiotics. If you want something to carry around with you ( Unless you'd be willing to walk around with a bar of soap in your pocket) try to find Hand Sanitizer that DOES NOT SAY kills 99.99% of germs, or buy liquid soap. I also encourage you to offer it to your friends rather than letting them use hand sanitizer. it WILL make a difference.
             thanks!

A Blog For Change

Let me clear something up. This is not a far off problem that will affect you great great great grand children. This is a problem that will affect us TOMORROW. It is a problem that already exists. Its is a problem that will only get worse. It is a problem that we can't ignore.

However, this issue is also preventable. it is not something that will require you to make life changes. little things, small enough to never notice. And yet, if everyone listens, if everyone tries, we can prevent a catastrophic outcome.

Today we grossly over use anti-biotics. We have them in Neosporin, in Hand Sanitizer, and in everyday medicine. The fact is, we don't NEED to smear antibiotics on a paper cut, or on our hands everyday, and we definitely don't need antibiotics for small sicknesses. The result of overusing these products is hard to see. But look at the label of HAnd Sanitizer. it says "kills 99.99% of germs." There will always be that 0.01% that will survive. And that small percentage will be resistant to the antibiotics. That small population will then multiply, meaning that the next time you use the Hand Sanitizer, it will have little to no effect. Everytime you use antibiotics needlessly, you create a population of bacteria that will be resistant, and this means that medicines will evetually not be strong enough. There have already been some medicines that had to be re-created because the bacteria that it was meant to be fighting became resistant. And, who is to blame? YOU. It is YOUR responsibility to spread the word, and to make the nessecary changes to ensure that there will still be medicine that works by the time you have children of your own. I am talking to this generation, and I am telling you that there needs to be a change.
